Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy.
Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas, that acts like a key to let glucose from the food we eat pass
from the blood stream into the cells in the body to produce energy. All carbohydrate foods are broken down
into glucose in the blood. Insulin helps glucose get into the cells. When your blood sugar goes up, it signals
your pancreas to release insulin. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t
use the insulin it makes as well as it should. When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to
insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream.
Uncontrolled diabetes can cause damage to almost every system of the body, such as heart , vision loss,
kidney and nerves –even leading to impotency.
Signs & Symptoms of Diabetes
Excessive thirst and hunger as the body cells cannot absorb glucose due to lack of insulin.
When blood sugar levels are high, the kidneys try to remove the excess sugar by filtering it out of
the blood. This can lead to a person needing to urinate more frequently, particularly at night.
Diabetes can impact on a person’s energy levels and cause them to feel very tired or fatigued. This
tiredness occurs as a result of insufficient sugar moving from the bloodstream into the body’s cells.
Unexpected weight loss
An excess of sugar in the blood can damage the tiny blood vessels in the eyes, which can cause blurry vision.
Patches of dark skin forming on the creases of the neck, armpit, or groin can also signify a higher risk of diabetes.
As the body’s immune system can’t function properly, wound healing becomes slower and skin infections can occur.
